The HSG Procedure — What to Expect

When to have it

HSG is typically done on days 7–10 of your menstrual cycle (after bleeding stops but before ovulation).

Preparation

Take a painkiller 30–60 minutes before. You may be given antibiotics to prevent infection. No fasting required.

The procedure

You lie on an X-ray table. A speculum is inserted, a thin catheter passed through the cervix, and contrast dye injected. X-ray images are taken as the dye flows through the uterus and tubes. Takes 15–30 minutes total.

After the test

Light spotting and mild cramps are normal for 1–2 days. Results are usually available immediately and discussed by your doctor at a follow-up consultation.

What is an HSG test?▼
HSG (Hysterosalpingography) is an X-ray procedure where a dye is injected through the cervix into the uterus and fallopian tubes. The dye shows up on X-ray images, revealing whether the tubes are open (patent) or blocked, and whether the uterine cavity is normal.
Why is the HSG test done?▼
The HSG test is done to check for blocked fallopian tubes (a common cause of female infertility), uterine abnormalities (polyps, fibroids, septum), or to confirm that tubes are clear after a reversal of tubal ligation.
Is HSG painful?▼
Many women experience mild to moderate cramping during the procedure, similar to strong period pain. The discomfort usually lasts 5–10 minutes. Taking an over-the-counter painkiller 30–60 minutes before the procedure can help reduce discomfort.
How long does an HSG test take?▼
The procedure itself takes about 15–30 minutes. You can return to normal activities the same day or the following day, though mild spotting for 1–2 days is common.
Can HSG unblock fallopian tubes?▼
In some cases, the dye used during HSG can flush out minor blockages, leading to improved fertility in the cycles immediately following the test. However, HSG is primarily a diagnostic tool — significant blockages require surgical treatment (hysteroscopy or laparoscopy).
